West Ham stunned as teenage starlet Jeremy Ngakia turns down contract

West Ham youngster Jeremy Ngakia has rejected the offer of a new contract in east London and the club is set to lose him for nothing this summer, according to Hammers news site Claret & Hugh and understood by

The Hammers had offered the teenage right back an extension to his current scholarship deal which would have given them time to further arrange a permanent, professional deal for the 19-year-old.

However, Ngakia has rejected the offer via his agent and is now likely to walk away from the club at end of his deal on June 30. Football.London understands there are other clubs keeping tabs on the player should he choose to leave the club, which is seemingly on the cards.

Ngakia's camp want him to be rewarded with a long-term deal on improved wages rather than an extension of his scholarship deal.

The Hammers were advised to attempt to get Ngakia tied down to a long-term contract before the turn of the year as there were murmurs he could look to move on unless he was offered a pro contract.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, clubs and players are allowed to negotiate to extend their deals if they run out past June 30 with the Premier League unlikely to finish by then but it has to be a decision taken by both club and player. That gives the Hammers a chance to come back with a new offer but the club is said to be furious at Ngakia's camp.

The defender has enjoyed a breakthrough under David Moyes this season as the youngster has played four times for the first team, making his debut against Liverpool at London Stadium earlier this season and his second start came away at Anfield.

West Ham during the break

Ngakia was preferred to Pablo Zabaleta while regular right back Ryan Fredericks was out injured having undergone shoulder surgery.

West Ham manager David Moyes scoured the transfer market for a new right back in January, having a bid rejected for Nottingham Forest defender Matty Cash and also expressing an interest in Barcelona’s Moussa Wague and RB Salzburg’s Rasmus Kristensen.

The emergence of Ngakia had softened the blow but his reluctance to pen a new deal in east London could see Moyes head back to the market this summer or promote another under-23 in Ben Johnson to take Ngakia’s place in the first team squad.

Ngakia joined the Hammers at the age of 14 and rose quickly through the ranks, making 17 appearances for the under-18s in 2016/17 before penning scholarship papers that summer and broke through to the under-23s the following season.

If Ngakia were to run down his contract then West Ham would be entitled to compensation for the player should he move to another English club. If he were to go abroad then the Hammers would get nothing.
