West Ham have made contact with PAOK over a move to sign forward Chuba Akpom in the January transfer window.

According to The Athletic, West Ham have already been in talks with PAOK as they look to strike a deal for the former Arsenal striker.

The report claims that West Ham in the market for a new number nine, with summer signings Ajeti and Haller struggling in the Premier League at the moment.

This does seem like an odd rumour, given that Akpom has fallen out of favour at PAOK this season. If he is unable to cut it in the Greek league, why would he be able to make a difference for West Ham in the Premier League? He only scored eight goals in 32 games for PAOK last season and has managed three in 13 this term, which is hardly prolific given the level he is playing at.

It is also worth mentioning that Akpom managed just seven goals in 81 club appearances in England during spells with Arsenal, Brentford, Coventry, Nottingham Forest, Hull and Brighton. Putting all of this into consideration, it suggests that Akpom would not be a promising signing for West Ham and certainly not a better option than Haller – who scored 20 goals for Frankfurt in all competitions last season.
