West Ham forward Marko Arnautovic has this week been at the centre of major controversy after he told his club he wanted to leave English football and head to the Chinese Super League.

An unnamed Chinese club have approached West Ham with a bid worth in excess of £36million and Arnautovic has received a contract offer in the region of £250,000 a week.

Arnautovic's brother and agent Danijel told TalkSport radio this week: 'West Ham bought Marko for peanuts. They paid £20m for him, which is nothing in the current market. Now West Ham have a fantastic offer. It is close to double what they paid for him. He wants to go to a new market and challenge for titles. This is what he wants.'

West Ham, for their part, insist Arnautovic will not be sold but are braced for another offer of £40m for the Austrian and the 29-year-old will continue to push for a move.

In contrast to West Ham's last wantaway star, Dimitri Payet, Arnautovic has continued to train at a high level and insisted he wanted to start as West Ham hosted Arsenal. At the London Stadium, he led the West Ham forward line, with Michail Antonio, Felipe Anderson and Samir Nasri operating in behind.

Pre-match: As the teamsheets are read out over the London Stadium loudspeaker, Arnautovic's name is greeted by mild cheers from the home crowd. There are, however, boos from the away end for former Arsenal midfielder Nasri, who controversially left Arsenal for Manchester City earlier in his career.

6 mins: Arnautovic makes a bright, brooding start to the game, holding off pressure from Shkodran Mustafi and laying off for Antonio to launch a counter-attack.

31 minutes: Arsenal become dominant in the opening. Noble's pass evades Arnautovic and he claps his hands before flapping his hands up-and-down at his team-mates. Marko wants improvement.

32 mins: Very nearly the breakthrough. Superb Arnautovic touch to bring down a flighted pass. He in turn sets up Nasri, who tees up Felipe Anderson and the Brazilian fires hard, low and narrowly wide.

43 mins: Arnautovic's sublime first-time control from a Mark Noble pass launches another West Ham assault on the Arsenal goal and Pablo Zabaleta earns a corner.

47 mins: GOAL for West Ham as Declan Rice thunders in the strike to give West Ham the lead. Arnautovic races over to join the celebrations, excitedly slapping Rice on the head after the 19-year-old scores his first for the club.

72 mins: Arnautovic's number is up as manager Manuel Pellegrini decides to bring on Andy Carroll as West Ham seek to protect their one-goal advantage. Arnautovic takes off his black gloves, trudges at snail's pace towards the dugout and raises his arms to all sides of the ground. The crowd respond with concerned applause. A dramatic farewell? Time will tell.
