West Ham manager David Moyes is plotting an ambitious move to snare Ross Barkley to the London Stadium on loan, according to reports.

Moyes brought the Liverpudlian through the ranks when the pair were together at Everton, with Barkley featuring seven times during his last season before he headed off to his doomed appointment at Manchester United.

Now the new Hammers boss is targeting a reunion with the midfielder after starting just six games for Chelsea under Frank Lampard, according to the Mirror.

Ross Barkley has missed a chunk of the season after a foot injury and is linked with West Ham

He started the the FA Cup game against Nottingham Forest last week, scoring in his first appearance since October, and played the full 90 again in the 3-0 win over Burnley, but will be anxious to see if he continues to be picked by the Blues legend.

He suffered a foot injury that kept him out for some time, and the likes of Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho and N'Golo Kante have been picked ahead of him in the centre of midfield.

The emergence of youngster Mason Mount hasn't helped Barkley's cause either, and the former Everton star will be disappointed with how his progress has stagnated after a resurgence last season - when he played 48 games under Maurizio Sarri.

He scored five times during that campaign and lifted the Europa League, but now things are looking bleak for Barkley - who faces the prospect of missing out on Gareth Southgate's Euro 2020 squad this summer if he can't maintain his place.

David Moyes gave Barkley his Everton debut in professional football and is keen on a reunion

Barkley has been frustrated by missing a chunk of the season with a foot injury in October

Chelsea are not thought to be interested in losing Barkley, even temporarily, as they are happy with their current squad depth.

But Moyes is reportedly hopeful that a deal can be struck in order to allow Barkley to stake a claim for Southgate's team. With Chelsea being linked with AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie, they could yet be persuaded if they were to make an acquisition this January.

West Ham are on the up again after a poor season that pushed them towards the relegation zone, and Barkley has the chance to excel in midfield for them with Southgate watching on closely.

Barkley's frustrating campaign so far saw him pictured dancing topless in a nightclub in Dubai over the international break in November, with his manager Frank Lampard admitting the player 'lacked professionalism'.
