England legend Sir Geoff Hurst believes that West Ham United starlet Declan Rice is in line to captain England one day after making a decision over his international future.

The 20-year-old West Ham midfielder has chosen to represent England despite playing for the Republic of Ireland from U16 level to the senior team.

He added: “Declan Rice has earned rave reviews among West Ham supporters and it’s good to see a young, homegrown player doing well for the club.

Who knows – he could become England captain in years to come.

“He seems like an honest, hard-working young player so I hope he can keep doing well for West Ham, and that can only be beneficial for England now that he has made the decision to play for the national team."

He would probably play more games with Ireland at this moment in time, but it looks like he’s gone with his gut to play for England and I wish him all the best.” Hurst has been impressed with Rice this season and he thinks that the young midfielder is only going to get better playing alongside the likes of Mark Noble with the Hammers.

“I think Declan is a player for the future when it comes to the national side.
