For many years my West Ham bible of choice has been John Helliar's 'The Elite Era' - a fantastic compendium containing nearly every stat you needed to know regarding any West Ham match since the late 1950s.

However no bona-fide Hammers statto should be without 'West Ham United - The Complete Record' - the new book by John Northcutt & Steve Marsh published by deCoubertin books.

They played at the Hermit Road ground in Canning Town..." Since the advent of the world wide web, statistical records books have become something of a rarity.

It's a book into which a lot of time and effort has quite clearly been spent and a labour of love for Marsh and Northcutt, who has been's West Ham in-house expert for several years.

It's also in this section that you discover, thanks to Northcutt and Marsh's extensive knowledge, that West Ham biggest attendance isn't, as claimed by the club, the 42,322 who saw a 1970 Division One match versus Tottenham - but rather a London derby against the same opponents some 43 years earlier.

"Back in 1895 the workers at the ship building firm Thames Ironworks former a football team.

But it's in the final section that the book really stands out with more stats than you can shake a smelly stick at.
