Opinion: Would a change of shape benefit West Ham and introduce fringe man

West Ham fans might not have been given what they wanted over the weekend as they fell to defeat against Crystal Palace in their last Premier League clash before the international break, but things could be a lot worse, as it was just their second loss in the competition this season.

With plenty of time between now and their next game, a Premier League trip to Goodison Park to take on out-of-form Everton is one that could see Manuel Pellegrini go into with a few experiments, seeing as he has plenty of time to think it over given the break between the Palace game and that trip to Merseyside.

Whilst we’re not suggesting that the Chilean gaffer needs to make many changes given how well his side has been performing, he could be set to rotate and even change his shape to bring some of his fringe players, including one Albian Ajeti.

The Swiss striker has hardly featured, and should Haller pick up an injury then he’ll have to go into the side with very little game time and not a lot of momentum, other than a couple of poor performances in the Carabao Cup with a changed side who were all looking to impress.

However, bringing Ajeti into the first team and using him alongside Haller could work for a time, giving the 22-year-old a chance to bed in at The London Stadium, which could work especially well considering the success that the front-man had at FC Basel when partnered up in a two-man partnership with ex-Norwich City man Ricky Van Wolfswinkel.

Last season saw the Swiss striker bag a combined 32 goals and assists in all competitions whilst Van Wolfswinkel, his veteran partner, bagged a combined 25, and now it could be time for Haller to play the role Van Wolfswinkel did and help Ajeti unlock his full potential at the London club.
