For the third season in a row, West Ham are at the foot of the Premier League table after the opening game of the season, and for the third season in a row, the Hammers need to find a way to get off it.

Last weekends 5-0 defeat to Manchester City was the heaviest opening day defeat the Hammers have suffered in recent memory, not that the 4-0 beatings to Liverpool and Manchester United in the previous two seasons were any better, but West Ham find themselves in an all too similar position after just one game into the new campaign.

Indeed, in the last two seasons following their massive opening day defeats, the east London side failed to win the second game of the season, with the Hammers losing to Bournemouth at home last year 2-1 and Southampton claiming a 3-2 win over West Ham the year before that, and in 2019, this trend has to end.

With Manuel Pellegrini’s side heading to the south coast to face Brighton, who are coming into this fixture on the back of a 3-0 win away to Watford, the Hammers seemingly face a tough task against a side coming off one of their best results during their time in the Premier League.

Yet there is a feeling amongst West Ham supporters and the players themselves that they need to win against Brighton.

Pellegrini himself has said that he has goals of taking the Irons to European football via BBC Sport, and getting three points from games likes this is what will separate the Hammers from the rest of the budding pack of Premier League sides dreaming of continental football.

West Ham’s early season form is notorious for how poor it is, but this squad under the guidance of Pellegrini can snap the curse before it gets worse, and put their lofty ambitions of European football in east London back on track.
