David Moyes believes observers are getting the wrong impression about his West Ham side despite losing their first two games since the resumption of the Premier League.

The Hammers have been downed 2-0 by both Wolves and Spurs after the three-month COVID-19 hiatus with the top flight returning to action nearly three weeks ago but the fortunes of the Hammers haven’t changed whatsoever.

They are only out of the relegation zone on goal difference with Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Norwich behind them in the table. The Cherries and Canaries both plate tomorrow (Wednesday) before West Ham kick off against Chelsea at 8.15pm in E20.

West Ham have lost two from two but Moyes was adamant there is more than meets the eye with his Hammers team heading into another crunch clash, this time against Frank Lampard’s in-form Blues, who have won all three of their games since football resumed.

The manager said at his pre-match press conference: “...we had our second best physical stats from the game against Tottenham, we have our third most sprints of the season....so sometimes people can get the wrong impression.

“We played a Spurs team with some top players and I thought our players did everything they could to get a result.”

Looking at the statistics, West Ham won 50% of their duels against Spurs in-game, made nearly 150 ball recoveries with 21 of them coming in the Spurs half and a 22.1 ”pressing intensity”, a metric which measures opponent passes per defensive action in opponent's final 60% of the pitch.

You can take from that whatever you like but Moyes was adamant that it was a good thing heading into the match against the Blues on Wednesday.

Christian Pulisic, who is an injury doubt for Wednesday’s game, scored his second goal in two games as Lampard;’s side toppled last year’s league champions. West Ham did beat Chelsea earlier this season with Manyuel Pellegrini at the helm and Moyes’ first win when he came to the club for the first time came against the Blues at London Stadium the season before.

Moyes said of his evening at Stamford Bridge last week: “Well I hope the team can take comfort from it, we’re looking for positives, we’re looking for things to keep us nice and high.

“When I was here last time we beat Chelsea at home and as you rightly said the players had a good result against them this season so we have to look at it as a real positive.

“But I was one of the fortunate ones that went to see Chelsea against Manchester City in midweek and undoubtedly we saw two very very good teams, two technically gifted teams and obviously a real good game as well.”
