The saga concerning Declan Rice’s future at international level has come to a close, after the West Ham ace confirmed he has submitted a written request to FIFA to transfer his registration to play for England.

The general consensus from England fans, as well as a number of West Ham supporters, was one of delight but the news did not go down well with Republic of Ireland supporters - although some did wish him the best for the future.

The 20-year-old West Ham midfielder represented the Republic of Ireland from U16 level through to the senior team, making his debut in 2018 and accumulating three caps, but his future was not committed as he had not featured in a competitive match.

He said: "I have equal respect and love for both England and Ireland and therefore the national team I choose to represent is not a clear-cut, simple selection.

A tug-of-war between the two nations then emerged before finally coming to a close today, six months after he was first omitted by then-manager Martin O’Neill while he considered his future.

Rice confirmed in a statement that he had spoken to the bosses of both nations, Mick McCarthy and Gareth Southgate, before coming to a final decision.
