Former West Ham United forward Marlon Harewood has told Love Sports Radio that he expects Manuel Pellegrini to deliver better results, as the group of players he has is strong enough for a top five, or at least top six, place.

To make the step up and fight the ‘big’ English clubs would take a significant change of fortune for West Ham, as the Hammers have won just over half as many of their games as those fighting for Europe have, but Harewood expects Pellegrini to make that step.

“If you’re looking at West Ham, I was saying the top five, top six teams, they should be there.

Harewood, who played 161 times for the Hammers, was speaking on Ian Stone’s Comedy Breakfast show on Monday, when he was questioned about how far he believes Pellegrini can take the current group of players gathered in East London.

The former centre-forward told Love Sport Radio: “We have got some top class players at the club, there’s no doubt about that.

At present, the West Ham are 10th with 33 points, 17 down on the Europa League place occupied by 5th placed Arsenal, and mired in a mid-table battle with Everton, Bournemouth and Leicester as Watford and Wolverhampton Wanderers edge closer to battling it out for 7th between them.

“You’re saying where they should be thinking, I’m saying top five really.
