Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool side are set to play their third game in just eight days when they line up against Southampton on Saturday.

The Reds opened their Premier League account in a 4-1 thrashing of Norwich on Friday and beat Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup final on penalties on Wednesday.

The game against Chelsea went to extra-time before penalties meaning Klopp is likely to rest some of the stars who played the full 120 minutes.

Goalkeeper Adrian is also an injury doubt.

The ex-West Ham stopper started his first Liverpool game against Chelsea after first-choice goalkeeper Alisson suffered a calf injury which has put him out of action indefinitely.

However, despite making a heroic penalty shootout save, Klopp revealed Adrian could also miss the fixture at St Mary’s.

“I don't understand why in the world of social media when we are all together, a supporter jumped over something and kicked his ankle,” Klopp said. “It is swollen but we have to see.

“Adrian won’t go for a scan. We wait for the swelling to go down. The flight didn’t help but I saw him now, it looks better and [we will] make a decision.”

Third-choice goalkeeper Andy Lonergan, who spent last season on loan at League One club Rochdale, is now in line to start.

“We need to think about Saturday to find a way to win the game,” Klopp added. “Andy Lonergan is in training with [Caoimhin] Kelleher and we have them if we have to make a decision. We will see.”

Midfielder Naby Keita has been ruled out of the game against Southampton and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who made his first start since April 2018 in the Super Cup is also a doubt, with Klopp saying the club will assess his fitness.

He explained: “It was positive for Oxlade-Chamberlain. We all know the potential he has and he can much more of an impact. That is normal. He needs to get used to all the intensity and this stuff.”

The Liverpool boss will also have a decision to make over his formidable front three.

Mohamed Salah played the full 120 minutes against Chelsea, while Sadio Mane has only just returned from a long Africa Cup of Nations campaign with Senegal.

Both could be in line for rests but given Mane’s lack of pre-season, he will likely drop to the bench for Divock Origi.

How Liverpool could line up against Southampton:

Lonergan; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Wijnaldum, Fabinho, Henderson; Salah, Firmino, Origi
