Some of the business that West Ham conducted whilst Manuel Pellegrini was in charge of the club for his season and a half was questionable at best.

Whilst certain deals, the one to bring Lukasz Fabianski in for example (BBC), were sublime, but then there was the decision to sign Jack Wilshere (BBC).

The ex-Arsenal midfielder wasn’t kept on by Unai Emery at the end of the 2017/18 season, and it seems that the Spaniard’s decision to move on without Wilshere was a good one, as in the season and a half since Wilshere moved to West Ham he’s played just 16 times for the club (Transfermarkt).

When moving to West Ham, Wilshere would likely have been hoping to add to his 34 England caps, but his awful injury record has stopped him from doing that, and as much as many West Ham fans will have wanted the midfielder to excel in Stratford, he’s been a massive flop and could now depart for free in the summer.

That’s according to one report from Football Insider anyway, who are claiming that the Hammers could be set to cut their losses with Wilshere and allow him to leave the club for nothing in the summer, a move that would bring the experiment with a very talented but even more injury-prone player to an unsuccessful end.

‘West Ham are working to find Jack Wilshere a new club when the season ends.’ ‘The England international, 28, has made little impact at the London Stadium since his 2018 arrival and internal talks have been held about offering him a pay-off to leave.’ ‘The club are exploring various measures to get Wilshere off their wage bill.’ ‘One strong possibility is letting him leave on a free transfer even though he has just over 14 months remaining on his contract.’ ‘The Premier League club could also loan Wilshere out for next season, potentially paying a portion of his wages as they have done with Winston Reid and his recent MLS move.’ ‘Hammers chiefs are not expecting to secure a fee for Wilshere this summer, given his wretched injury history.’ ‘There is growing acceptance at West Ham that Wilshere’s body can’t cope with the physical demands of Premier League football.’
