Karlan Grant’s two goals for Huddersfield failed to earn his doomed side a rare Premier League victory as the division’s bottom club conceded twice in the final seven minutes to West Ham and Javier Hernandez.

West Ham’s Mexican substitute stooped to head in a six-yard header, having been left inexplicably unmarked by the visiting defence, from Samir Nasri’s right-wing cross on 83 minutes.

And, after Philip Billing had missed a glorious chance to restore Huddersfield’s lead, Hernandez was again on hand to glance in Felipe Anderson’s cross in the first minute of added time.

That at least left the London Stadium resounding to cheers as opposed to a first half that offered plenty of concern for Manuel Pellegrini, even before the whistle was greeted by a chorus of boos from home supporters.

Against a team destined for the Championship and with just four wins in the previous 385 days, West Ham struck the bar early, through Michail Antonio’s header, and were gifted a 15th-minute penalty.
