The International Cricket Council has announced a record prize pot for the winners of the forthcoming World Cup.

The team that lifts the trophy at Lord's on July 14 will receive a minimum of £3.1million.

A total of £7.8m is up for grabs when the tournament gets under way at the end of May.

As well as the winners' cheque the ICC will pay £31,000 for each group stage victory, with losing semi-finalists banking £625,000 and the runners-up scooping £1.56m.

Hosts England are favourites to lift the trophy for the first time, with the competition getting under way on May 30 with their Oval clash against South Africa.
