Declan Rice’s rise from West Ham academy player to England international was one of the more inspiring stories of last season.

The 20-year-old midfielder was one of the Hammers most standout players in what was ultimately an average season for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, yet things are still looking up for both club and player.

Indeed, Rice admitted recently to The Evening Standard that he was committed to West Ham for the next few years, and his performances for England have also been encouraging, and now Darren Bent has thrown his hat into the ring in praising the youngster.

Speaking to Football Insider, the former Premier League attacker claimed that the deep-lying midfield role in the England squad was seemingly made for Rice, with Bent saying: “They tried (playing) Eric Dier, he’s not getting enough games at Spurs, they tried Jordan Henderson but he wants to play further forward, so at the moment, that role seems made for Rice.” With the West Ham man starting both games for England in this recent international break, it appears that Gareth Southgate has seen potential in Rice as a long-term option for the Three Lions in the midfield, and given his role as an anchorman in the team, his position is under no real threat with no players similar enough to him from the current international pool.

Rice’s club future is seemingly set in stone with his aforementioned comments about wanting to stay with West Ham, and with the midfielder now taking these performances to the international stage with the Three Lions, the 20-year-old’s potential importance for both the Hammers and for his country has never been more obvious to see.
