Thomas Hitzlsperger, a member of West Ham’s 2010/11 squad, has been named VfB Stuttgart’s new Head of Sport, having excelled as the Bundesliga outfit’s academy director.

Hitzlsperger replaces Michael Reschke in the role as Stuttgart believe the former midfielder can help guide the struggling German outfit forward and out of the relegation play-off picture they currently find themselves in.

The 36-year-old has been appointed to his new position as VfB feel his extensive football knowledge from a playing career that only ended in 2013 and a wealth of leadership qualities will help to guide the club’s necessary improvements.

As a player, that was not something Hitzlsperger was able to do, though, as he moved to East London at a time Gianfranco Zola had only managed to steer the club to a 17th place finish in the Premier League and exited both the FA and League Cup in the Third Round.

The following season saw the former Germany international feature in 13 games, scoring three goals and assisting a further six, but the Hammers ended the season in 20th place and were relegated to the Championship.
