When he played badly, the Hammers played badly.

West Ham recruited 12 new players across the 2017/18 season, with ten of them arriving last summer and two in January as he moulded his first team and also strengthened the U23 set up.

Two of Pellegrini's summer recruits - Andriy Yarmolenko and Carlos Sanchez - suffered serious injuries early in the season.

Sanchez picked up a knee problem last September and only returned to action in the top flight for the final game win at Watford, while Yarmolenko missed the rest of the campaign after rupturing his achilles tendon for the second time in career.

Jack Wilshere, a free signing from Arsenal, also spent more time off the pitch than on it thanks to two separate ankle injuries though he returned a bit earlier than others to action.

The January window was much more quiet in east London as only Samir Nasri arrived as a free agent for the first team while the U23 ranks were bolstered as Portuguese youngster Mesaque Dju was recruited from Benfica.

Overall, the new signings did well for Pellegrini though they weren't without their struggles at times.
