David Moyes has thrown down the challenge to West Ham’s attacking talent, telling them to “up their game” in the Hammers battle against Premier League relegation this season.

West Ham have lost both of their matches since returning to action a fortnight ago, losing 2-0 to both Wolves and Spurs and sit outside the drop zone on goal difference. They have helped by those teams below them, Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Norwich, also failing to win since football returned.

West Ham have managed just four shots on target across the two games, while Pablo Fornals has spurned golden chances in both games to put the Hammers ahead. Neither of them were taken and when the team has gained just one point from losing positions like the Hammers have this season, those chances can’t be wasted.

Moyes has had to make do without club-record signing Sebastien Haller since the restart with a hip injury and he is still a doubt for the game against Chelsea on Wednesday having missed the previous two matches.

Michail Antonio has been deputising for Haller but hasn’t come close to scoring and the manager has ignored both Albian Ajeti and youngster Xande Silva, who have been unused substitutes in both matches.

Hammers supporters are clamouring for a recognised striker to get a start against Chelsea or, if Moyes decides not to use his reserves, then for Antonio to play in his natural wing position and someone else through the middle, potentially Andriy Yarmolenko.

Moyes was asked at his pre-match press conference if those such as Bowen, Antonio, Felipe Anderson and other attackers need to step up to fire the team to safety with goals hard to come by.

“I get to work with them and I see them every day. I get the opportunity to give them the chance to show they can do it and they have to do it,” the manager said.

“If I’m not seeing it I won’t use them. What I’m seeing is a group of players who are all together, working really hard, obviously know the situation.

“We’re desperate to make sure we don’t get ourselves in a poor situation and I’m trying everything I can to get the best attackers and the best players to give me a chance of winning the game.

“But part of the job is to see what you get in training and what I’m seeing in training means they can score. They’re more than capable of doing it but when they get on the field they’re going to have to up their game and show exactly how to get goals and do it a bit better.”

Moyes refused to confirm if Haller would be available for the game against Chelsea on Wednesday, saying only that the Frenchman was “back on the grass” having missed out for the past two matches.

Arthur Masuaku has returned to training after a twisted ankle, Angelo Ogbonna has remained in training as well despite having not featured since the restart as Moyes plays it safe with the defender.
