West Ham have had problems negotiating a new contract with Conor Coventry, according to Claret & Hugh.

The negotiations have been going on for weeks, but the club feel that his representatives are making too big demands for a player who has no Premier League experience.

Their stance, of ensuring they are not held to ransom in the negotiations, comes as a consequence of the amount they ended up paying Reece Oxford.

The 19-year-old has been impressive for the U23s, but his current situation is a concern, especially due to the fact that his current deal comes to an end in the summer of 2020, as per Transfermarkt.

As impressive as Coventry has been in the youth ranks of both his club and country, this is still a player who has only ever played 52 minutes of first-team football, all of which have come in the Carabao Cup.

The youngster, of course, should be ensuring he gets what he is worth, but it seems a little bit early for disputes over money – the hope is that this won’t have an impact on his performances or development in any way.

The sooner this situation gets sorted the better, as talk around Coventry should be about his talent and potential, not his wages.
