At half past midnight in Turkey, and after extra-time, Liverpool and Chelsea played themselves out to a penalty shoot-out in the Uefa Super Cup.

It proved to be a fully-committed encounter with Chelsea responding to their heavy weekend defeat to Manchester United in what was only Frank Lampard’s second game in charge as their head coach.? For Liverpool there was another comeback in Istanbul, but nothing as dramatic as in the Champions League final here 14 years ago, as they trailed at half-time.

However Chelsea also responded to draw level after Sadio Mane had scored twice to apparently deliver another European trophy to Liverpool.

Even so both sides may pay a price when the weekend fixtures come around with players cramping up by the end.? There were walls of red inside the stadium, an opportunity for the vast reach of Liverpool’s support in this part of the world to be evidenced in what is such an important city for the club, with the burnished memory of the 2005 Champions League final.

It added to the sense that they were the overwhelming favourites in what was the first contest between two English teams for this prize.? There was no Englishman, though, in Chelsea’ starting XI, with Lampard showing how important he felt the occasion was by going with N’Golo Kante, who had trained the day before, but did not take a full part given he was suffering from an ankle injury.

It did not show.? There was shades of Baku about that with the key midfielder having played in the Europa League final, which led to Chelsea being here, even though he was not fully fit which led to what Lampard said had been his “broken” pre-season.

So, once again, it confirmed this match mattered in the renewal of a keen rivalry which had reached such a vicious intensity more than a decade again at the height of the Mourinho/Benitez years when they played each other 10 times in the Champions League.?
